Max Verstappen emerges victorious in a soaked F1 Canadian Grand Prix

Max Verstappen secured victory at the Canadian Grand Prix for the third consecutive year, held at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Notre Dame Island in Montreal, Quebec. This marked Verstappen’s 60th career win and his sixth triumph out of nine races in 2024. Starting from second place on the grid after matching polesitter George Russell’s qualifying time, the Red Bull driver took the lead on lap 47 of the 70-lap race, which had initially been led by Russell and later by McLaren’s Lando Norris.

“It was a pretty chaotic race, with a lot of twists and turns, and we had to make quick decisions,” Verstappen commented after the race. “Our team performed exceptionally well today, staying composed and making timely pit stops. The safety car period played in our favor, and even after that, we managed the race effectively. I enjoyed it a lot; these challenging races are always thrilling.”

The race was heavily influenced by changing weather conditions, with intermittent rain making tire choice crucial. Haas driver Kevin Magnussen opted for wet tires at the start while most others went for intermediates. This gamble paid off initially, as Magnussen progressed from 14th to 8th in the early stages.

Lando Norris secured second place, finishing 3.879 seconds behind Verstappen, despite showing strong pace in the mid-section of the race. Mercedes-AMG drivers followed, with George Russell in third and Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time winner at the circuit, in fourth. Norris’ McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri claimed fifth position, with Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, both driving for Aston Martin, coming in sixth and seventh respectively.

Unfortunately, it was a disappointing day for Ferrari, as both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz failed to complete the race.
