Sergio Perez to remain with Red Bull in F1 with contract extension until 2026

Sergio Perez has inked a two-year contract extension with the Formula 1 team Red Bull, keeping him with the team through 2026. The Mexican driver, also known as “Checo,” was facing speculation about his future with the team due to struggles in matching the pace of teammate Max Verstappen.

Although Perez has not secured a victory since the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in April 2023, he has been commended for his defensive driving skills, particularly in supporting Verstappen’s championship-winning campaign in 2021. Verstappen currently leads the standings for this season with 169 points, followed by Charles Leclerc with 138, while Perez holds fifth place with 107 points.

Expressing his gratitude for the faith placed in him, Perez stated, “I want to thank everyone for all the trust they are putting in me, it is a lot and I want to pay it back with excellent results on track, and off track. I think we have a lot of work to do, we have a lot more Championships to win together.”

Christian Horner, the team principal, emphasized the importance of continuity and stability by confirming Perez’s presence for the 2025 season. Perez joined Red Bull in 2021 and has clinched five victories with the team, along with one win for Racing Point in 2020.

The contract extension means Perez will also be driving under the new rules set to be introduced in 2026, which will see cars relying more on the electric component of their hybrid systems.

With Lewis Hamilton making a move from Mercedes to Ferrari next year, Red Bull is set to maintain its lineup for 2025, potentially becoming the only of F1’s major teams to do so.
