Review of the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser: Impressive features, family-friendly, but a bit costly

Advantages: Versatile off-road capabilities; powerful hybrid engine; spacious cargo area; excellent visibility; attractive design

Disadvantages: High price for basic features; interior quality and features fall short; complexity of hybrid system compared to previous Land Cruisers

The anticipation for the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser is high, and for good reason. This new model represents a significant departure from its predecessor, offering a more affordable price point but sacrificing some of the rugged durability that made the Land Cruiser famous. While it may not be as robust for extreme off-road adventures, it should still suit the needs of suburban drivers. After all, it’s still a Toyota.

Constructed on the same truck platform that underpins other Toyota vehicles like the Tundra and 4Runner, the new Land Cruiser shares similarities with the Lexus GX. However, it stands out with its unique design and off-road capabilities, especially with the turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid engine that delivers impressive fuel efficiency. Although it lacks some advanced features like the GX’s automatic disconnecting stabilizer bars, the Land Cruiser remains true to its off-road heritage with a manually disconnecting stabilizer bar.

There are two main variants available, the stripped-down Land Cruiser 1958 and the more upscale “Land Cruiser.” The 1958 model features a basic interior with hard plastics, which may not justify its price tag. On the other hand, the “Land Cruiser” offers a more premium experience that aligns with its cost. Despite some missing features, the higher trim level delivers on expectations.

What’s Different in the 2024 Model?

A lot has changed.

What’s the Interior Like in the Land Cruiser and What Technology Does it Offer?

The interior quality and features vary between the Land Cruiser 1958 and the standard “Land Cruiser” model. While the 1958 model comes with hard plastics and basic amenities, the “Land Cruiser” offers premium materials and additional features. The technology also differs, with the higher trims boasting a larger touchscreen display and more advanced digital cluster.

How Spacious is the Land Cruiser?

The new Land Cruiser is smaller than its predecessor, making it easier to maneuver and park. Despite its compact size, it still offers a generous cargo space with a boxy shape. While it lacks a third-row seat due to the hybrid battery, the Land Cruiser provides ample room for luggage and gear. Roof rails are available on the “Land Cruiser” for additional storage options, while the 1958 model may require additional accessories for roof mounting.

What are the Fuel Economy and Performance Figures for the Land Cruiser?

The Land Cruiser is equipped with a turbocharged inline-four engine paired with an electric motor, delivering impressive power and torque for a combined output. While towing capacity is slightly lower than its predecessor, the new model offers significantly improved fuel efficiency. With an EPA-estimated rating of 22 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined, the new Land Cruiser outperforms its predecessor and rivals in the segment.

How does the Land Cruiser Perform on the Road and Off-Road?

During our limited test drive of the Land Cruiser 1958, we found the hybrid powertrain to be capable and responsive, especially for highway driving. The body-on-frame construction and off-road suspension provide a stable ride, although some bumps can still be felt due to the truck-like setup. Off-road performance is commendable, with good ground clearance and approach angles. The manual disconnecting stabilizer bar enhances wheel articulation for challenging terrain. While the Land Cruiser may not offer the automated disconnect system found in the Lexus GX, its simplicity makes it more suitable for customization and modifications.
