BYD introduces breakthrough plug-in hybrid technology boasting an impressive 1,200-mile range.

The most recent sedan iterations of the BYD Qin L and Seal 06 models showcase the Chinese automaker’s newest plug-in hybrid technology. Starting at 99,800 yuan ($13,775), BYD claims that owners of vehicles utilizing this new PHEV technology can save up to 9,682 yuan annually in fuel expenses in comparison to those driving gasoline models.

When the battery is fully charged and the gasoline tank is full, the technology guarantees a driving range of 2,100 kilometers (1,249 miles), according to Company Chairman Wang Chuanfu. The latest tech, now in its fifth iteration, achieves an exceptional fuel consumption rate of 2.9 liters per 100 km (62.1 miles), even after the batteries have been drained.

The former generation of BYD’s plug-in hybrid technology provided a driving range of a few dozen kilometers on batteries and a fuel consumption rate of 3.8 liters per 100 km purely on the gasoline engine. This technology has contributed to the automaker’s rapid growth since 2021, with models like the Qin Plus DM-i sedan and Song Plus DM-i SUV leading the way.

Plug-in hybrids priced from 79,800 yuan have accounted for the majority of BYD’s sales over the past three years, resulting in a total of 3.6 million such cars sold by the company.

In the first quarter, the Chinese company reduced prices of its plug-in hybrids by 10-22%, with the Qin and Song models surpassing gasoline models such as Lavida and Sagitar in the mass market. This success is attributed to lower prices and reduced fuel consumption, which have appealed to cost-conscious Chinese buyers.

Globally, BYD, while increasing its international presence, still lags behind major automakers like Toyota, Volkswagen, General Motors, and Stellantis in terms of sales.

Together with other Chinese EV manufacturers, BYD is presenting a stronger challenge to Japanese automakers in overseas markets such as Southeast Asia, Australia, and the Middle East, where there are fewer trade barriers and tariffs imposed by governments.
