Alfa Romeo to Introduce Electric Italian Dodge Durango-inspired Large CUV

Midway through 2022, Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato announced to Reuters that the Italian automaker would be developing a new electric vehicle in the United States, set to be released in 2027. This new vehicle is targeted towards markets that have a preference for large SUVs, with Imparato stating, “Our offering of a large-sized vehicle must cater to international markets – American, Chinese, and European.” While the exact dimensions of the vehicle were not confirmed, there were hints that it could blend features of a crossover and a sedan, possibly falling somewhere between the two in terms of size.

Several months later, in January of the following year, Imparato shared further details about the upcoming EV SUV with Automotive News Europe, describing it as a “high-performance SUV” with power outputs ranging from 300 to 800 horsepower in the standard models, and up to 1,000 horsepower in the Quadrifoglio trim. The vehicle will also feature an 800-volt architecture that allows for rapid recharging times of up to 18 minutes.

Recent discussions on a forum on Cochespias of Spain (via Mopar Insiders) suggest that the production site for this new Alfa Romeo will be the Detroit Assembly Complex – Jefferson plant in Detroit, where the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango are currently produced. The vehicle will be based on the STLA Large platform, shared with the next-generation Grand Cherokee and Durango.

While the next-gen Giulia and Stelvio will continue to be manufactured in Italy, it seems that the new E-segment Alfa Romeo will have a production capacity of 1,961 units in 2027 and 10,715 units in 2028. This flagship vehicle is expected to have a design more aligned with the Grand Cherokee and Durango, emphasizing electric propulsion over hybrid options.
