Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un: The Ultimate Hellish Roadtrip Duo

North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin are pals, which certainly doesn’t bode well for international relations. They’re evidently so close that Putin presented his North Korean counterpart with a lavish Russian-made limousine on Thursday—the second such gesture this year. The two commemorated the diplomatic exchange by taking the Aurus Senat for a spin.

If I hadn’t witnessed it firsthand, I would have assumed it was fabricated with AI or a comedic sketch. The footage, broadcasted on Russian state TV, depicts Putin and Kim enjoying a leisurely drive around what appears to be a park. The two swap seats to allow Kim to take the wheel before returning to what is presumably Kim’s palace, as reported by The Guardian.

So, what exactly is this limousine that Putin bestowed upon Kim? It’s an extravagant luxury vehicle known as an Aurus Senat. The Russian-manufactured limousine is the nation’s interpretation of a Rolls-Royce or Maybach-style luxury car. The Aurus brand was founded in 2018 after Putin expressed a desire for a new luxurious vehicle for his motorcade. In 2021, Aurus unveiled the first model available for purchase by the public, the Senat.

The Senat is offered in three variants: the standard Senat, the Senat Long, and the Senat Limousine, which is the model Putin gifted to Kim. It is powered by a 4.4-liter twin-turbo hybrid V8 engine producing 590 horsepower developed by Porsche, according to Autoweek.

In terms of appearance, it bears a striking resemblance to a Rolls-Royce, which seems to be the intention. From the imposing front grille to the wheels to the opulent interior, it exudes the exact aura of a vehicle a dictator would utilize to assert dominance. Aurus also manufactures a model that appears to be a Cullinan replica named the Komendant.

What’s astonishing about all this is that this marks the second Senat Putin has bestowed upon Kim in under six months. In late February, Putin gifted Kim his initial Senat, with the one featured in the video above clearly being the subsequent one. Meanwhile, Kim reportedly presented Putin with artwork, including several sculptures as per the BBC
