The Trident’s triumphant return signaled by Maserati GranCabrio Folgore and Trofeo

Maserati is striving diligently to emerge from the slump that characterized the Levante, Ghibli, and Quattroporte era. With the introduction of the GranCabrio Folgore and Trofeo to its lineup, the iconic Italian automaker appears to be leaving that era behind. The GranTurismo coupe, and its GranCabrio droptop counterpart, serve as a guiding light for Maserati. Despite having the MC20 supercar, the two-door four-seater is equally important to the company. Maserati needed to ensure that this car was perfected in order to move past the three FCA horsemen of the apocalypse and the outdated image of its predecessor.

I can confidently state that the GranCabrio, in both electric Folgore and gas-powered Trofeo variants, successfully accomplishes this goal… for the most part. It is significantly more impressive than the Maseratis of previous years, but there are a few factors holding it back from being truly exceptional.

Full Disclosure: Maserati sponsored a trip to northern Italy for me, covering accommodation in upscale hotels and providing an abundance of fish that has deterred me from seafood for the foreseeable future, all to experience the new GranCabrio Trofeo and Folgore models.

No matter how you look at it, the Maserati GranCabrio is a remarkably striking vehicle. Its elongated hood, rounded fenders, and sleek rear end embody the classic Maserati aesthetics that we have grown to admire. Removing the roof only enhances this appearance, in my opinion. It sits close to the ground as all performance cars should. In developing the Folgore, the engineers opted against a skateboard-style battery pack. Instead, it runs in a T-shape down the vehicle’s center. This not only enhances handling (discussed later) but also allows Maserati to keep the GranCabrio Folgore low to the ground.
