Rivian reveals plans for the release of five new models

Rivian is set to receive a $5 billion investment from the Volkswagen Group, with plans to launch five new or updated electric models in the coming years, including three affordable mass-market cars.

The announcement was made in a presentation for investors, categorizing the models into Gen 1, Gen 2, MSP, and Affordable Mass Market. The Gen 1 cars include the R1T, R1S, and the electric delivery van used by Amazon. Gen 2 refers to updated versions of the R1T and R1S, as well as a third model yet to be revealed.

MSP, or “midsize platform,” will underpin the R2, R3, and R3X, set to debut in the future. Additionally, a third model on the MSP architecture is in the works. The presentation also hints at upcoming entry-level vehicles that will be more budget-friendly.

While details are scarce, the R2 is expected to start at around $45,000, indicating that the R3 and entry-level cars will be even more affordable. Deliveries of the R2 are slated to begin in the first half of 2026.

Q: When will Rivian start producing the R3?

A: The timeline for the production of the R3 has not been announced yet, but it is expected to follow the release of the R2.

Rivian’s partnership with the Volkswagen Group and their plans to expand their electric vehicle lineup signal exciting developments for the future. With a focus on affordability and innovation, Rivian is poised to make a significant impact in the EV market in the coming years.
