Purchase This Custom Dodge Charger Pickup and Upgrade Its Rear Appearance

Here in the United States, we never really embraced utes, the car-based pickup trucks that are popular in Australia and other markets. While there were a few exceptions like the Ford Ranchero, Chevy El Camino, and Subaru Baja for a brief period, they never gained widespread popularity in the U.S. We were tantalizingly close to getting a Pontiac G8 ute in the late 2000s, but unfortunately, it never materialized. Some enthusiasts have taken matters into their own hands and built their own utes, with mixed results, like this Dodge Charger pickup currently listed for sale on eBay.

The Dodge Charger pickup conversion was performed by Smyth Performance, a company based in Rhode Island that specializes in ute conversion kits for various car models like the B6 and B7 Audi A4, Subaru Impreza, and MK4, MK5, and MK6 Volkswagen Jetta and Golf. According to the eBay listing, the donor car for this conversion was a 2015 Charger. The project was dubbed “Operation Thunder,” and it included the installation of Charger Widebody fenders on the front and rear.

Overall, the conversion appears to be well-executed, particularly in the front end and cab sections. The attention to detail is evident, ensuring that the vehicle maintains its Charger identity throughout. However, when it comes to the rear, things take a different turn. The rear end design seems slightly off, giving the impression of a melting appearance. The eBay listing mentions the challenges faced in creating the tailgate:

The original kit design did not align with the Hellcat wide body front, necessitating a new design approach. The revised design incorporates elements of the Hellcat model, requiring extensive work to finalize a functional tailgate. The design was meticulously crafted using foam, followed by the creation of a fiberglass mold for the new components. Replacing the kit’s rear section with the new parts proved to be a time-consuming process. After several adjustments, the final result successfully merges the Hellcat aesthetic into the rear, resulting in a visually striking vehicle.

Despite its impressive appearance, this Charger pickup is more show than go. Beneath the skin, it’s powered by a modest 3.6-liter V6 engine producing 300 horsepower, a far cry from the Hellcat’s performance. The seller mentions a few upgrades, including a cold-air intake, high-performance coils, and a catback performance exhaust, but it’s still not a high-performance beast. With 30,000 miles on the odometer, this unique vehicle is priced at $42,000 or best offer for those interested in adding it to their collection.
