Production of the 2025 Volvo EX90 Begins After Previous Year’s Delay

Following an eight-month delay, Volvo’s Ridgeville, South Carolina plant has begun production of the EX90 battery-electric SUV. Originally scheduled for production in late 2023, Volvo faced challenges with integrating the EX90’s Iris lidar system and Sentinel software from Luminar Technologies. As a result, production was pushed back to the first half of this year.

The inclusion of a laser-based sensor array, standard on all EX90 trims, has been a focal point for Volvo. CEO Jim Rowan emphasized the importance of ensuring the lidar system operates effectively within Volvo’s safety stack.

The integration of the code with Volvo’s new VolvoCars.OS software platform, developed in collaboration with Nvidia, posed complexities. This new “core computing” system, utilizing Nvidia’s Drive Orin chips, allows for a more streamlined electrical architecture and frequent hardware updates.

Despite the delay, Rowan sees it as a learning opportunity that will benefit future Volvo models. The knowledge gained from this experience will carry over to future vehicle architectures.

At the South Carolina plant, the first customer EX90 in Denim Blue will be delivered later this year. Additionally, the plant’s S60 sedan has seen a significant increase in year-to-date sales compared to the previous year.
