For years now automakers, politicians and car enthusiasts alike have been discussing how Chinese automakers are emerging to impact our country and the auto industry as a whole. While we have yet to witness any Chinese companies enter the U.S. market and start distributing cars here, several existing brands have been discreetly selling cars manufactured in China to (probably some) unsuspecting Americans. So far in 2024, over 40,000 made-in-China cars were purchased in the U.S., and that number is expected to continue rising.

The second-generation Lincoln Nautilus was predominantly crafted and engineered with the Chinese market in mind. Since its introduction to the U.S. market in early 2024, it has rapidly become the top-selling vehicle for the brand. In the first half of the year, 17,504 Nautiluses were sold, marking a 41.7-percent increase compared to the same period in 2023, and surpassing the brand’s next best-seller, the Corsair, by approximately 5,000 units. Lincoln achieved sales of 8,273 Nautiluses in Q2, representing a 20.8 percent increase from Q2 last year.

Buick’s Envision SUV was the pioneering China-built car to hit the U.S. market in 2015. Now in its second iteration (with a more appealing design), the Envision continues to be manufactured in China for consumption in America. Buick sold 21,860 Envisions in the first half of the year, experiencing a nearly 21 percent decline likely attributed to the model’s recent facelift.

Due to parent company Geely, the U.S. has received made-in-China Volvos for over five years now. Currently, the only remaining model is the S90 sedan, which has not been a strong seller historically. Volvo does not provide specific sales figures for the S90, opting to combine them with the V90 wagon built in Sweden. Only 808 units of the 90 series were sold in the first half of the year.

Also within the Geely group, the China-built Polestar 2 has been available for purchase in the U.S. since 2020. Polestar’s global sales have declined significantly this year, with only 3,301 units of the Polestar 2 delivered in the first half of the year in America. The upcoming Polestar 4 is set to launch later this year and will also be manufactured in China before production shifts to South Korea next year.
