Kimera K39 hill climb car sets sights on conquering Pikes Peak in 2025

This is the essence of Kimera and the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, showcasing the new K39. There is much to discover about the craftsmanship that went into this masterpiece, but what we do know is that the internal components are built to endure challenges. Unlike its predecessors EVO37 and EVO38, which utilized the shell of a Lancia Beta Montecarlo, the K39 features a full carbon monocoque chassis. The EVO37 and EVO38 were equipped with a turbocharged and supercharged 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine, with the EVO38 boasting all-wheel-drive and approximately 600 horsepower, a hundred more than the rear-wheel-drive EVO37.

Although Kimera did not participate in this year’s hill climb, they have announced plans to bring the K39 to Colorado next year with the aim of breaking the all-time record. Their goal is not to surpass the best time for an internal-combustion-engined car, currently held by Sebastien Loeb in the Peugeot 208 T16 at 8:13.878 in 2013, but to exceed the record set by Romain Dumas in the electric Volkswagen ID.R at 7:57.148 in 2018.

The challenge for Kimera lies in competing against the electric powertrain of the ID.R, which has the advantage of performing well in high altitudes due to the lack of oxygen in the air at higher elevations. While few gas-powered cars have completed the hill climb in under nine minutes, the ID.R remains the only vehicle to break the eight-minute barrier. This underscores the formidable task ahead for Kimera and the K39.

With the K39 expected to deliver more than the 600 horsepower of the EVO38 and feature an all-wheel-drive system to maximize performance, Kimera is poised to take on the likes of Loeb’s twin-turbo V6 Peugeot and the twin-turbo V6 Norma M20 SF PKP, which produced around 875 and 800 horsepower respectively. The design of the K39, including the rearranged exhaust pipes, hints at the potential power and agility of this powerhouse.
