In 2025, Toyota to Introduce First Electric Vehicle with State-of-the-Art Self-Driving Technology in China

Toyota is set to introduce the first electric vehicle model featuring a sophisticated autonomous driving system similar to Tesla’s Full Self-Driving for the Chinese market next year, according to one of its Chinese joint ventures.

The partnership with state-owned Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC) is focused on regaining Toyota’s market share in China by keeping pace with Chinese competitors in hybrid technology, batteries, and smart vehicles.

During an event in Guangzhou, the joint venture unveiled a range of innovative goals.

GAC Toyota revealed plans to launch the Bozhi 3X SUV next year as the initial model equipped with a system enabling advanced driving assistance for parking and navigating highways and city streets. This move is expected to solidify its position as a leader in autonomous driving technology among all international brands in China.

GAC Toyota is collaborating with Momenta Global, a startup specializing in autonomous driving software for automakers like Mercedes-Benz, to develop the system. Additionally, the company is working with Huawei to integrate the latter’s in-vehicle operating software into an electric sedan slated for release in 2025 in China.

In efforts to reduce production costs for its bZ4X EV, Toyota plans to introduce an iron phosphate lithium battery between 2026 and 2027, potentially cutting costs by 40%.

Toyota held the fifth position in car sales among all brands in China during the first four months of this year, experiencing a 22% decline compared to the same period in 2023, based on data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.
