First Drive Review: 2024 Polestar 4 – Embracing the Future

MADRID, Spain — Throughout history, automakers have utilized windows as a key selling point, especially when the design features more windows than expected. For example, Volkswagen’s Deluxe Microbus with Samba Package, also known as the 23-window Bus, remains a highly sought-after trim. Similarly, the Citroën XM flagship model offered a 13th window to prevent wind from entering the cabin when the hatch was open. With the Polestar 4, the industry may have reached the peak of window design.

One of the most notable eccentricities of the Polestar 4 is the absence of a rear window. This feature is particularly unusual for a premium electric vehicle, rather than a typical van found in a contractor’s fleet. However, the lack of a rear window is not the only unique aspect of the 4. After test-driving a pre-production model on a test track, I took the 4 out on public roads.

In terms of positioning, it is important not to read too much into the “4” nameplate. Polestar follows a numerical naming convention based on the order of model releases. The 4 is simply the fourth model introduced by Polestar and is positioned below the 3 in terms of size and pricing. The segment in which it competes is somewhat ambiguous, resembling a crossover between a sedan and a hatchback rather than a traditional SUV.

Despite its unconventional design, the Polestar 4 attracts attention with its unique styling. While incorporating Polestar’s signature design elements such as T-shaped headlights, a grille-less front end, and a thin rear light bar, the 4 maintains its own distinct identity.

Polestar justifies the lack of a rear window as a deliberate design choice to create a coupe-like body style for improved aerodynamics and a spacious interior. The use of a window-less rear hatch allowed for the D-pillar to be shifted back, providing additional interior space. The Polestar 4 is built on the modular SEA architecture shared with other brands under the Geely empire.

At launch, buyers can choose between two configurations: the Long Range Single Motor and the Long Range Dual Motor. The Single Motor model features a single electric motor powering the rear wheels, while the Dual Motor model offers all-wheel-drive with a motor on each axle. Both configurations are equipped with a 100-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack.

The Polestar 4 prioritizes performance, delivering instant torque and a relatively low center of gravity for agile handling. The optional Performance Pack enhances the driving experience with specific chassis tuning, larger wheels, high-performance tires, upgraded brakes, and unique seatbelts.

Unlike the 3 model, which utilizes an air suspension system, the 4 features a conventional steel setup. The rear-wheel-drive model has a fixed suspension, while the all-wheel-drive model offers adaptive suspension with three driving modes. The infotainment system, shared with the 3 model, is displayed on a 14.5-inch touchscreen with Android-based software and user-friendly interface.

The Polestar 4 offers a minimalist interior design with a focus on the touchscreen interface. The cabin features few physical buttons, with most functions controlled through the touchscreen. Various driving settings can be customized to create a personalized driving experience.
