DINWIDDIE, Va. — NHRA legend John Force was alert and communicating with safety personnel immediately following a dramatic, 300-mph crash on Sunday at the Virginia Nationals at Virginia Motorsports Park.

Force, who is 75 years old, was evaluated at the track by the NHRA Medical Team before being airlifted to a medical facility for further examination.

During the initial round of Funny Car eliminations, Force’s engine exploded at the finish line, causing his car to veer across the centerline and collide with the concrete walls on both sides.

Three weeks ago in New Hampshire, Force achieved his record 157th NHRA victory and his second win of the season. He had previously suffered a serious racing crash in Ennis, Texas back in 2007.

“We’re keeping our friend John Force in our thoughts and prayers. He’s a resilient individual,” stated Tony Stewart, the former NASCAR driver who now competes in NHRA’s Top Fuel category, on social media.

Later on the same day as Force’s accident, Force’s teammate Austin Prock clinched the Funny Car division title by defeating Bob Tasca III in the final round.

“The trophy is headed straight to John Force at the hospital,” Prock announced from the winners’ circle.

“It’s difficult to witness someone you care about go through such an ordeal, but I know he will bounce back. As race car drivers, we must stay focused and carry on. I believe John would want us to continue racing and I’m pleased that we executed our tasks effectively.”
