BMW X2 excels in Insurance Institute safety tests after redesign

The recently revamped 2024 BMW X2 crossover, which is slightly larger and features enhanced technology, has achieved the Top Safety Pick designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The organization praised the SUV, now available starting at $42,995, for its excellent crashworthiness and crash avoidance capabilities.

IIHS evaluates vehicle performance using ratings of poor, marginal, acceptable, or good. To qualify for the Top Safety Pick award, a vehicle must achieve good ratings in two frontal crash tests and a side impact test. Additionally, the standard headlights and forward collision avoidance system must meet certain criteria. The X2 excelled in all required tests.

While the X2 has not yet undergone the updated moderate overlap test for the Top Safety Pick+ award, it has met high standards in other areas.

The X2, known as a “baby X4,” has increased in size and weight compared to its predecessor. It is offered in two versions: the xDrive28i and the M35i xDrive. The former is equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 241 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, while the M Performance model boasts 309 hp. Both models feature a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with a limited-slip differential.

It is worth noting that the new X2, manufactured in Germany, serves as the basis for Mini’s new Countryman four-door model.
