Alpine A290 Electric Hot Hatch Sets Out on Path to Mainstream Success

In May 2023, Renault-owned Alpine gave a sneak peek of its reentry into the hot hatch market with the debut of an electric concept car named the A290_β (pronounced “A290 beta”). Featuring a mix of futuristic and retro elements, this design study was closely linked to the Renault 5 Prototype concept introduced in 2021. Shortly after, Alpine revealed plans for a significant model expansion that would introduce seven new vehicles to the market by 2030, marking a departure from its traditional niche positioning. Leading this lineup is the production A290, an electric hot hatch set to hit the market in a limited Premiere Edition, as well as standard GT, GT Premium, GT Performance, and GTS trims.

All trims are powered by a single motor on the front axle, delivering an immediate 221 pound-feet of torque. The GT and GT Premium models are tuned to produce 177 horsepower, while the GT Performance and GTS trims can reach up to 215 hp with the activation of an “Overtake” function located on the steering wheel. The A290 weighs in at 3,261 pounds and can accelerate from 0 to 62 miles per hour in 6.4 seconds for the more potent trims. Additionally, a regenerative braking system offers four different levels of regeneration, controlled by the RCH button on the steering wheel.

The A290 is equipped with a 52-kWh battery, providing an estimated range of 236 miles on the WLTP cycle. Fast-charging capabilities allow for a 30-minute charge from 15% to 80% battery capacity, adding approximately 90 miles of range in just 15 minutes.

Inside, a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster is paired with a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen. Even the base GT trim includes features like 19-inch wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport EV tires, LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, heated sport seats, a Nappa leather-wrapped steering wheel, and front and rear parking assistance. The GT Premium and GT Performance trims offer additional luxury and sporty upgrades, with the former boasting a contrasting black roof, blue brake calipers, a Nappa leather interior, Devialet premium audio, and an electronic rearview mirror. The Performance variant comes with the more potent motor, red brake calipers, Michelin Pilot Sport 5 tires, and Alpine Telematics with dynamic info pages categorized into Live Data, Coaching, and Challenges. The top-tier GTS trim features exclusive enhancements and rides on black Snowflake wheels.

The A290 GTS Premiere Edition will be limited to 1,955 units, paying homage to Alpine’s founding year. Buyers can choose from three themes: Beta, La Grise, and La Bleue. While pricing details have not been revealed for the home market, it is expected to command a premium over the €30,000 ($32,398 U.S.) Renault 5 sibling hatch.
